Chapter 1 · The Old Speaker
Every day after school, Noah waited in the library until 4:30.
It was not because he loved books. It was because Tyler and his friends waited at the school gate every afternoon. If Noah walked out at four, they would be there. They would take his bag. They would laugh at him. Sometimes they pushed him into the bushes.
If he waited until 4:30, they got bored and went home.
So Noah sat at the table by the window and pretended to read. His eyes were on the page, but he did not read a single word.
The library was in the old part of the school. The wooden floors made small sounds when you walked. High on the wall hung an old speaker, gray with dust. It had not worked in years.
