Chapter 1 · The Girl Who Wasn't There
Lin Wei hated Mondays. Most of all, she hated always keeping her two lives apart.
Last night, while her classmates were asleep, Lin Wei had been on a rooftop three blocks from home, pulling a cat out of a burning trash can — and posting the video without sharing her real name, under the name "Firefly." By morning, it had two hundred thousand views. Nobody in her class had any idea.
None of it came from anywhere magical. Three years of early morning runs, self-taught martial arts drills learned from videos after her parents fell asleep, a body and a will pushed far past anything her classmates would ever guess — that was the whole secret. She'd started the year she decided she never wanted to feel helpless again. Most nights now, she used all of it to help someone else instead.
"Lin Wei." Zhan Yu, the new transfer student, was scrolling through the video. "Did you see this? Someone in our neighborhood is a real hero."
"Cool," she said flatly. If he asked one more question, she'd have to lie again — and she was reluctant to tell one more lie today.
